For 2020, 28 EU/EEA countries reported 4 824 confirmed cases of Shiga toxin -producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infection. The overall notification rate was 1.6 cases per 100 000 population. The highest notification rates were reported in Ireland, Malta, Denmark, and Norway. The EU/EEA notification rate decreased notably in 2020 compared with 2016-2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shigellosis is a relatively uncommon disease in the EU/EEA, but remains of concern in some countries and for some population groups. For 2020, 29 EU/EEA countries reported 1 806 confirmed shigellosis cases.
In 2019, 176 confirmed cases of congenital toxoplasmosis were reported in the EU/EEA, with Franceaccounting for 76% of all confirmed cases due to its active screening of pregnant women.
As of 15 July 2022, 401 confirmed (n=399) and probable (n=2) cases of monophasic S. Typhimurium have been identified in the EU/EEA and the United Kingdom.
