Since last week’s update, and as of 30 August 2023, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 61 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and 4 deaths related to WNV infections.
Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 13 December 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 707 human cases of WNV infection, 152 outbreaks among equids and 247 outbreaks among birds.

Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 9 August 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 89 human cases of WNV infection in Italy (56), Greece (22), Romania (5), France (3) and Hungary (3). EU/EEA countries have reported 5 deaths in Greece (3) and Italy (2). EU-neighbouring countries have reported 9 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia (9) and no deaths.
Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 4 October 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 599 human cases of WNV infection in Italy (295), Greece (153, of which 2 with unknown place of infection), Romania (68), France (33), Hungary (28), Spain (11), Croatia (6), Germany (4) and Cyprus (1).
Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 2 August 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 41 human cases of WNV infection in Italy (26), Greece (11), France (3) and Hungary (1). EU/EEA countries have reported 3 deaths in Greece (2) and Italy (1). EU-neighbouring countries did not report any human cases of WNV infection.
