West Nile virus - human cases, 2 August 2023

Since the beginning of the 2023 transmission season and as of 2 August 2023, EU/EEA countries have reported 41 human cases of WNV infection in Italy (26), Greece (11), France (3) and Hungary (1). EU/EEA countries have reported 3 deaths in Greece (2) and Italy (1). EU-neighbouring countries did not report any human cases of WNV infection.
During the current transmission season and as of 2 August 2023, within the reporting countries, autochthonous human cases of WNV infection were reported from 22 different NUTS 3 regions, of which the following region reported autochthonous human cases of WNV infection for the first time ever: Gironde in France.
