Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 16 November 2017, EU Member States reported 203 cases: Romania (66 cases), Italy (57), Greece (48), Hungary (21), Croatia (5), Austria (4), France (1) and Bulgaria (1). Eighty-two cases were reported in neighbouring countries: Serbia (49), Turkey (5) and Israel (28).
Twenty-six deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania (14 deaths), Greece (5), Hungary (2), Italy (1), Croatia (1), Serbia (2) and Turkey (1).
Between 2 and 9 November 2017, Romania reported two cases in previously affected areas, with disease onset in September and October. Italy reported two cases from Asti (Piedmont), a newly affected WNF area for humans, with onset dates in September. In addition, Romania reported one death due to West Nile fever in a previously reported case.

Between 26 October and 2 November 2017, Hungary reported one case in Budapest. Eleven new cases were reported by Israel. All cases were notified in areas already considered to be affected.
In addition, Hungary reported one death due to West Nile fever in a previously reported case.

Twenty-four deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania (13 deaths), Greece (5), Hungary (1), Italy (1), Croatia (1), Serbia (2) and Turkey (1).
Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 19 October 2017, the EU Member States reported 193 cases: Romania (62 cases), Italy (54), Greece (48), Hungary (19), Croatia (5), Austria (4) and Bulgaria (1). Sixty-eight cases were reported in neighbouring countries: Serbia (46), Turkey (5) and Israel (17). Twenty deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania (10 deaths), Greece (5), Hungary (1), Italy (1), Croatia (1), Serbia (1), Turkey (1).
Between 12 and 19 October 2017, Turkey reported five cases and Romania reported two cases. Greece and Italy both reported one case. One of the cases reported in Turkey is in a newly affected area. All other cases were notified in areas already considered to be affected.
Turkey also reported one death due to West Nile fever.
The aim of this evaluation was to review the implementation, determine the lessons learnt and formulate recommendations to strengthen ECDC’s capacity to mobilise experts for field deployment to support future outbreak response initiatives, both in and outside the EU.
