WHO “SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands” is an annual campaign that makes part of major global effort to support healthcare workers to improve hand hygiene practices in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, and thus support the prevention of healthcare-associated infections.

The first goal of this year’s campaign is monitoring of and feedback on hand hygiene. Evaluation and repeated monitoring of a range of indicators reflecting hand hygiene infrastructures and practices, as well as healthcare workers’ and senior managers’ knowledge and perception of the problem of healthcare-associated infections and the importance of compliance with hand hygiene practices is a vital component of any successful hand hygiene campaign.

The second goal is to encourage patient participation in hand hygiene promotion. Patient participation is a powerful approach to achieving improvements in healthcare by building and strengthening a strong patient safety climate.
