As of 3 March 2016, autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection have been reported from 38 countries and territories worldwide in the past two months. Forty-one countries and territories have reported autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection in the past nine months.
Since last week, WHO AFRO reported that sequencing of the Zika virus in Cape Verde by Institut Pasteur in Dakar confirmed that the virus currently circulating in Cape Verde is the same as the one circulating in the Americas - the Asian type- and was most likely imported from Brazil. This is the first time that the Asian Zika strain has been detected in Africa.

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection present in some tropical areas of Africa and South America. On 6 January 2017, Brazil reported an outbreak of yellow fever that started in December 2016 and is still ongoing. Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Suriname have also reported cases of yellow fever in 2017.
