This report presents the results of the eighth round of the external quality assessment (EQA-8) scheme for Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) typing, organised for national public health reference laboratories (NPHRLs) providing data to the Food- and Waterborne Diseases and Zoonoses Network (FWD-Net), managed by ECDC.
The annual accounts include the financial statements and the report on implementation of the budget. They are accompanied by the report on budget and financial management during the year.
This issue of the ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report (CDTR) covers the period 14-20 August 2022 and includes updates on COVID-19, monkeypox, West Nile virus infection, swine influenza, Vibrio growth, poliovirus and poliomyelitis.
Since last week’s update, and as of 17 August 2022, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 103 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and four deaths. Cases were reported by Italy (84) and Greece (19). Deaths were reported by Italy (3) and Greece (1). EU-neighbouring countries reported 19 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia and no deaths related to WNV infections.
Since the beginning of the 2022 transmission season, 12 outbreaks among equids and 52 outbreaks among birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. Outbreaks among equids have been reported by Italy (10), France (1) and Hungary (1). Outbreaks among birds have been reported by Italy (51) and Germany (1).
Since the beginning of the 2022 transmission season and as of 17 August 2022, EU/EEA countries have reported 292 human cases of WNV infection in Italy (228), Greece (59), Austria (2), Romania (2) and Slovakia (1). There were 15 deaths in EU/EEA countries in Italy (13) and Greece (2). ECDC has produced several documents that address RCCE and provide examples of ongoing RCCE activities in the EU/EEA countries, as well as tools for public health authorities.
Anthrax continues to be a rare disease in humans in Europe, with only a few cases reported every year. For 2017, two European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries reported six confirmed anthrax cases (Romania reported five cases and Bulgaria one). The remaining 28 reporting countries did not notify any confirmed cases.
