This issue of the ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report (CDTR) covers the period 18-25 May 2024 and includes updates on respiratory virus epidemiology in the EU/EEA, influenza, avian influenza, and cholera.
In 2022, 27 European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries reported 731 echinococcosis cases. Of these, 299 (41%) cases were reported as Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato, 185 (25%) as E. multilocularis and 247 (34%) as an unknown species.
In 2022, 28 European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries reported 39 cases of trichinellosis, which represented a 49% decrease compared with 2021.

The Annual Epidemiological Reports (AERs) are a key ECDC publication on the epidemiology of communicable diseases of public health significance in Europe.
This report contains genetic and antigenic characterization data generated at the Worldwide Influenza Centre for viruses with collection dates after 31 August 2023 until 31 January 2024.
ECDC cooperates with international partners, such as the World Health Organization and the centres for disease control and prevention (CDCs) across the globe.
ECDC also cooperates with EU candidate countries, potential candidate countries, and European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) countries.
In the context of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) conference of the Belgian EU presidency, with ECDC as one of the organisers, the Director participated in the high-level meeting ‘An EU Health Emergency’ in Brussels.
