In a concerted effort to combat healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the Belgian EU Presidency on 6-7 May co-hosted a conference at the national public health institute of Belgium, Sciensano, in Brussels.
From 23–26 April 2024, experts from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the African Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) met in Stockholm, Sweden, to exchange expertise on surveillance, data management and epidemic intelligence.
In this episode we take a closer look at the data collection for respiratory viruses and why we should take this more seriously than just a cough or a sneeze.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has previously raised the alarm on the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance, estimating that over 35 000 people die annually from infections resistant to antibiotics in the European Union (EU), Iceland, and Norway.
In this episode we sit down for a chat with Gianfranco Spiteri - ECDC's Group Leader in the Epidemic Intelligence team and look at the recent AI developments and what the new tools can bring to ECDC's work.
ECDC and World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe have jointly developed the European Respiratory Virus Surveillance Summary (ERVISS), an interactive surveillance data dashboard for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that also features a weekly epidemiological summary.
As autumn moves to winter, the WHO/Europe, EC and ECDC are issuing a clear, urgent message: people who remain unprotected against both COVID-19 and seasonal influenza – especially the most vulnerable and at-risk – should take up any offer for vaccination to prevent or mitigate the impact of these co-circulating respiratory infections.
