The United Nations has set a goal to end the tuberculosis epidemic by 2030 but despite an overall downward trend of TB cases in Europe, the current decline in the number of cases will not be sufficient to meet these targets.

In 1955, a vaccine was invented and was introduced on a wide scale. Thanks to global efforts, polio was eliminated from the Western Hemisphere by 1994, and has greatly decreased worldwide.
