MediPIET will be the 76th member of the TEPHINET network of field epidemiology and laboratory training programmes which currently has programmes in more than 100 countries worldwide. TEPHINET aims to develop, connect, and mobilise a global field epidemiology workforce to strengthen public health systems and advance health security worldwide.

ECDC Director Dr. Andrea Ammon stated: “ECDC is pleased to announce that MediPIET has now joined TEPHINET as a full member ten years after its establishment. This is good news for a network of field epidemiologists who continuously invest in training and workforce capacity building for better epidemic and pandemic response, and who have valuable experience to share with programmes around the world.”

TEPHINET was founded in 1997 and is part of the global network of Field Epidemiology Training Programmes (FETPs). To date, TEPHINET member programmes have trained more than 20 000 public health officials globally.

The MediPIET programme was originally set up in 2013 at the initiative of the European Commission with a two-year establishment phase managed by ECDC (MediPIET I, 2013-2014). From 2018 to mid-2021, MediPIET was implemented by the Consortium ISCIII – FCSAI, with the scientific advice of ECDC. Since mid-2021, MediPIET has been implemented by ECDC as a part of the EU Initiative on Health Security.
