COVID-19 situation update worldwide, as of 15 October 2020

Since 31 December 2019 and as of 15 October 2020, 38 581 234 cases of COVID-19 (in accordance with the applied case definitions and testing strategies in the affected countries) have been reported, including 1 093 140 deaths.

Cases have been reported from:

Africa: 1 606 133 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are South Africa (696 414), Morocco (160 333), Egypt (104 915), Ethiopia (86 430) and Nigeria (60 834).

Asia: 12 058 767 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are India (7 307 097), Iran (513 219), Iraq (413 215), Bangladesh (382 959) and Philippines (346 536).

America: 18 370 940 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are United States (7 916 100), Brazil (5 140 863), Argentina (931 954), Colombia (930 159) and Peru (856 951).

Europe: 6 508 271 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are Russia (1 340 409), Spain (908 056), France (779 063), United Kingdom (654 644) and Italy (372 799).

Oceania: 36 427 cases; the five countries reporting most cases are Australia (27 341), French Polynesia (3 511), Guam (3 341), New Zealand (1 520) and Papua New Guinea (578).

Other: 696 cases have been reported from an international conveyance in Japan.

Deaths have been reported from:

Africa: 38 830 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are South Africa (18 151), Egypt (6 077), Morocco (2 726), Algeria (1 827) and Ethiopia (1 312).

Asia: 216 309 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are India (111 266), Iran (29 349), Indonesia (12 156), Iraq (10 021) and Turkey (9 014).

America: 600 543 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are United States (216 872), Brazil (151 747), Mexico (84 898), Peru (33 512) and Colombia (28 306).

Europe: 236 437 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are United Kingdom (43 155), Italy (36 289), Spain (33 413), France (33 037) and Russia (23 205).

Oceania: 1 014 deaths; the five countries reporting most deaths are Australia (904), Guam (61), New Zealand (25), French Polynesia (13) and Papua New Guinea (7).

Other: 7 deaths have been reported from an international conveyance in Japan.

NOTE:

*As of 6 October 2020, according to Mexican Public Health Authorities, the cumulative numbers of cases and deaths have increased significantly compared to the previous days due to a late publication of data.

United Kingdom: from 3 October 2020, due to a technical issue, COVID-19 cases from 24 September to 1 October will be reported by British authorities in the coming days.

On 2 October 2020, authorities in Ireland retrocorrected the total number of COVID-19 deaths leading to a negative value for the deaths reported on 3 October 2020.

On 10 September 2020, Jersey reclassified nine cases as old infections resulting in negative cases reported on 11 September 2020.

As of 7 September 2020, there is a negative number of cumulative cases in Ecuador due to the removal of cases detected from rapid tests. In addition, the total number of reported COVID-19 deaths has shifted to include both probable and confirmed deaths, which lead to a steep increase on the 7 September.

From end of August 2020, Swedish authorities are performing daily data consolidation leading to data retro-corrections. From week 38, the Swedish Public Health Agency will update COVID-19 daily data four times per week on Tuesday–Friday. Hence, the cumulative figures and related outputs include cases and deaths from the previous 14 days with available data at the time of data collection.

Epidemiological curves

These histograms are based on the available information at the time of publication, originating from several sources. Data completeness depends on the availability of information from the affected areas. All data should be interpreted with caution as the outbreak is evolving rapidly. In addition, due to the unavailability of date-of-onset data and different testing policies per country, this figure might not be reflective of the evolution of the epidemic.

In the graph, no deaths are reported on 25 May in Europe due to the national retro-correction of death data in Spain. The number of deaths in Europe was less than the negative numbers reported by Spain that day.
