ECDC Director statement on the Commission proposal for a new legislation on blood, tissues, and cells

News story

The ECDC Director has issued a statement in light of the Commission proposal for a new legislation on blood, tissues, and cells.

“We welcome the EU Commission’s comprehensive revision of the existing legislation to ensure safety and quality of blood, tissues, and cells.

ECDC has proven expertise in the sector, providing guidance on how to protect recipients of substances of human origin from communicable diseases.

Our future technical guidelines in the area will be the main point of reference for the entities working with substances of human origin; they will have to achieve equivalent standards of safety and quality as the ones set out by the guidelines. Also, ECDC will operate a dedicated network in the field of microbial safety and substances of human origin.

This task pertains to ECDC’s strengthened mandate, as part of the European Health Union project – the overall efforts of the European Union to be better prepared and able to coordinate its response to health challenges across Member States.”
