Overview

Since the beginning of 2026, and as of October 2026, over 2.5 million cases of dengue and over 1 000 dengue-related deaths had been reported globally according to information from publicly available sources.  This is a decrease compared to the same period in 2025 (Communicable disease threats report, 8-14 November 2025, week 46).

Epidemiological overview

An overview based on publicly available information from official sources and reports from different regions highlighting trends in different countries/ territories is presented below. The country/ territory trends summarised are based on data availability at the time the report was prepared; more detailed analyses are therefore only provided for countries/ territories with sufficient data.

EU/EEA

Since the beginning of 2026 and as of October 2026, France and Italy have reported locally acquired dengue transmission.

For more information on locally acquired dengue cases reported in the EU/EEA excluding the outermost regions by France, please visit the dedicated ECDC website. With regards to EU/EEA outermost regions, a summary of recent trends is presented below:

For the EU/EEA's outermost regions, a summary of recent trends is as follows:

Americas

In the Americas, as of week 40 of 2026 (ending 4 October), 1 845 488 dengue cases have been reported, of which 30% were laboratory-confirmed, according to 30 October 2026. The current reported cases are 54% fewer than during the same period in 2025, and 61% below the five-year average. While all four serotypes have been reported in the region to date in 2026, their distribution varies across the different countries of PAHO (Report on the epidemiological situation of dengue in the Americas). As of week 40, in 2026, most cases have been reported by Brazil (1 368 616), Colombia (88 469), Peru (72 111), Mexico (61 894) and Bolivia (59 953).

South-East Asia

According to the WHO South-East Asia Region Epidemiological Bulletin, 21st edition,21 October 2026, and earlier 2026 bulletins, dengue has been reported in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste since October 2025. Available information on epidemiological trends is summarised below.

Western Pacific Region

In the WHO Western Pacific Region, dengue transmission continues to be reported by several countries and territories according to WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757 (29 October 2026). Available information from the WHO WPRO report for countries/territories with recent updates are summarised below:

  • Cambodia: As of 18 October 2026, 119 222 cases and 121 deaths had been reported. This was a 137% increase compared with the corresponding period of 2025 (50 213 cases). Weekly cases had declined since the peak in week 35 but remained above the epidemic threshold (WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757, 29 October 2026).
  • Indonesia: In September 2026, 821 cases and one death were reported. The total number of cases reported in 2026 and until September is 97 460 including 254 deaths. Monthly case numbers had decreased since January (WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757, 29 October 2026).
  • Laos: During 12-18 October, 232 cases and one death were reported, compared with 227 cases the week before. The 2026 cumulative total number of cases was 6 133, 39.9% lower than the 10 204 reported during the corresponding period of 2025 (WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757, 29 October 2026).
  • Singapore: During 11-17 October, 61 cases were reported, 84.8% more than during the corresponding period of 2025 (33). The cumulative 2026 total was 2 704 cases. Preliminary October serotyping identified DENV-1 (51.4%), DENV-2 (13.5%) and DENV-3 (35.1%); DENV-4 was not detected (WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757, 29 October 2026).
  • Viet Nam: In week 43 (19-25 October), 5 390 new cases were reported, 37.4% fewer than in the previous week (8 616). By week 43, 166 507 cases and 21 deaths had been reported in 2026, 24.7% more than during the corresponding period of 2025 (133 473 cases). Approximately 68% of cases were reported from the southern region (WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757, 29 October 2026).
  • Pacific island countries and areas: Among the 20 of 21 Pacific island countries and areas with available syndromic surveillance data, most reported decreasing or low dengue-like illness activity in weeks 41 and 42. Increased dengue-like illness activity was observed in the Marshall Islands (WHO WPRO Dengue Situation Update #757, 29 October 2026).

Africa

According to the Africa CDC Epidemic Intelligence Report of 11 October 2026, a total of 4 407 cases has been reported in the continent from the Central African Republic (1), Kenya (1 583), Mali (2 531), Mauritania (110), Nigeria (95), Senegal (86) and Sierra Leone (1).

Note: the data presented in this report originate from both official public health authorities and non-official sources, such as news media, and depending on the source, autochthonous and non-autochthonous cases may be included. Data completeness depends on the availability of reports from surveillance systems and their accuracy, which varies between countries. All data should be interpreted with caution and comparisons, particularly across countries, should be avoided due to under-reporting, variations in surveillance system structure, different case definitions from country to country and over time, and use of syndromic definitions.

ECDC assessment

Since the beginning of 2026 and as of September 2026, in the EU/EEA (excluding outermost regions), France and Italy have reported locally acquired cases of dengue.

The likelihood of onward transmission of dengue virus in mainland Europe is linked to importation of the virus by viraemic travellers into receptive areas with established and active competent mosquito vectors (e.g. Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti). The Aedes albopictus mosquito is established in a large part of Europe. In Europe and neighbouring areas, the Aedes aegypti mosquito is established in Cyprus, on the eastern shores of the Black Sea, and in the outermost region of Madeira.

For the risk related to dengue in mainland EU/EEA, please see ECDC's dengue risk assessment for mainland EU/EEA.

Additional information on locally acquired dengue cases in 2026 in the EU/EEA is available in ECDC's seasonal surveillance reports for dengue, and in ECDC's factsheets on dengue.

Mosquito-bite prevention is strongly recommended for travellers to countries and areas with reported cases of dengue. Travellers to areas with active outbreaks or elevated risk should follow travel health advice. Pregnant travellers, older adults and people with chronic conditions may be at higher risk of complications associated with dengue.

Actions

ECDC monitors this threat through its epidemic intelligence activities and reports on it on a monthly basis. A summary of the worldwide overview of dengue is available on ECDC's website.
