Within the overall theme of European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) 2020, “Dancing with elephants: New partnerships for health, democracy, business”, ECDC is hosting a workshop that will explore innovative digital solutions for comparable data, strong health systems and good decision-making.

The European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG) is an independent, non-partisan organisation, founded in 1998 as a European health policy conference. This year, EHFG will take place as a digital event from 30 September to 2 October.

In a session organised by ECDC, experts and policymakers from national and international organisations will discuss how early lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic can be translated into a roadmap for strengthening health systems and wider research and public health endeavours in the EU. The session will identify the critical information needs during a crisis and discuss how organisations and agencies such as WHO and ECDC can best support Member States in generating such information.

Moderated by Nick Fahy, Senior Researcher at the University of Oxford and a consultant in health policy and systems, the 90-minute workshop will be divided into two panels.

Speakers on the first panel will approach the topic from a global and EU/European perspective, and include:

•             Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, European Commission;

•             Mike Ryan, Executive Director, WHO Health Emergencies Programme;

•             Andrea Ammon, Director, ECDC.

Discussing the topic from a country and academic perspective, the second panel of speakers will include:

•             Isabel de la Fuente García, Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg

•             Sotirios Tsiodras, Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Greece

•             Tove Fall, Professor in Molecular Epidemiology at Uppsala University, Sweden

In addition, there will be plenty of opportunity for the audience to interact throughout the session in the form of polls, Q&A and an ‘interactive break’ between the two panel discussions.

The workshop will take place on Friday 2 October 2020, from 09:00 to 10:30. Highlights will be available on the ECDC Twitter account: @ECDC_EU, and for updates throughout the conference, follow #EHFG2020 and @GasteinForum
