ECDC and EFSA publish maps showing distribution of disease vectors across Europe

Update
ECDC and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have today published updated their maps displaying current new knowledge on the spatial distribution of mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies and biting midges across Europe.

The maps use data from VectorNet, a joint project which collects and validates data on disease vectors that can affect human and animal health.

The latest update highlights several important developments, including the first reported introduction of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Luxembourg and the continued expansion of Culex tritaeniorhynchus in Greece, a mosquito species considered a potential vector of Japanese encephalitis.

The update also includes broader improvements to the maps themselves. All maps are now colour-blind friendly, making them more accessible and easier to interpret for a wider audience.

The updated VectorNet maps support public health preparedness and help authorities monitor changes in vector distribution that could influence the risk of vector-borne diseases in Europe.
