Transmission of selected arboviruses through substances of human origin (SoHO) - A scoping review

In this scoping review, covering publications from January 2000 to June 2025, probable or certain transmission cases of arbovirus through substances of human origin (SoHO) were identified for West Nile virus (WNV), dengue virus (DENV) and Zika virus (ZIKV). However no transmission cases were identified for chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Usutu virus (USUV), or Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV).
- The review identified 77 documented cases of probable or confirmed arbovirus transmission through SoHO for WNV (47 cases), DENV (26 cases) and ZIKV (four cases).
- For WNV, forty-five cases of transmission through transfusion of blood components (platelets, red blood cells, plasma and granulocytes) were identified, along with one transmission case through haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and one transmission case through breastfeeding.
- For DENV, 23 transmission cases were identified through transfusion of blood components (platelets, red blood cells and plasma), two transmission cases through haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and one transmission case through breastfeeding.
- For ZIKV three transmission cases were identified through transfusion of blood components (platelets) and one transmission case through breastfeeding.
- There were no reports of transmission through SoHO for three of the six arboviruses considered in this review: chikungunya virus (CHIKV), Usutu virus (USUV) and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV).
