The event followed presentations at the Daily Commissioners’ Midday Press Briefing on antibiotic resistance and provided the possibility to explore the theme in more detail with expert speakers.

Speakers for the first session include Paola Testori Coggi (Director General, Directorate-General for Health and Consumers), Ruxandra Draghia-Akli (Director of the Health Directorate, Directorate-General for Research and Innovation), Marc Sprenger (ECDC Director), Guénaël Rodier (Director of the Division of Communicable Diseases, Health Security and Environment, WHO/Europe) and Mats Ulfendahl (Secretary General for Medicine and Health, Swedish Research Council).

ECDC presented the latest pan-European data on antibiotic resistance and the results of a survey on carbapenem-resistant infections. Carbapenems are a major last-line of antiobiotics. In addition, the European Commission, the Directorate-General for Health and Consumers launched the results of a Eurobarometer on public attitudes towards antibiotics and the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation will announce initiatives to promote research into new antibiotics.

Representatives from Copa-Cogeca, the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), the Pharmaceutical Group of the EU (PGEU), the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA), the European Patients’ Forum (EPF) and the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) made short opening statements about the work that their organisations are doing to support the efforts against antimicrobial resistance in Europe.
