Salmonellosis is the second most commonly reported gastrointestinal infection and an important cause of foodborne outbreaks in the EU/EEA. In 2015, 95 595 laboratory-confirmed cases were reported; the EU/EEA notification rate was 22.9 cases per 100 000 population.
