Key facts
Consultation rates for respiratory illness in both primary and secondary care remain at low or baseline levels in all reporting EU/EEA countries.
SARS-CoV-2 remains the main contributor to respiratory virus activity in primary and secondary care this week, with median test positivity of 5.2% in primary care and 4.8% in secondary care.
- SARS-CoV-2 test positivity in syndromic surveillance systems using clinical case definitions is above 5% in seven countries in primary care and two countries in secondary care. Increasing numbers of SARS-CoV-2 detections are also being reported through laboratory-based surveillance systems in both primary and secondary care settings. Most detections in secondary care are reported among adults aged over 65 years.
- Influenza virus activity is at baseline or low levels overall throughout the EU/EEA. Low numbers of influenza detections are reported in both primary and secondary care. Most detections in secondary care are among adults aged over 65 years. Detected viruses belong to the influenza A virus type, with A(H1N1)pdm09 being the main identified subtype.
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity is very low.
Overview
ECDC monitors respiratory illness rates and virus activity across the EU/EEA. Findings are presented in the European Respiratory Virus Surveillance Summary (ERVISS.org), which is updated weekly.
Key visualisations from the weekly bulletin are included below.
All data are provisional and may be affected by reporting delays, incomplete country data or low testing volumes. A few countries with high testing rates can disproportionately influence pooled data. Further information is available under ‘Country notes’ and ‘Additional resources’.
