Periodic monitoring Active

Key facts

  • Consultation rates for respiratory illness in both primary and secondary care remain at low or baseline levels in all reporting EU/EEA countries. However, rates are increasing in many countries, as expected at this time of year.
  • Overall, SARS-CoV-2 and influenza contributed similarly to respiratory virus activity in both primary and secondary care this week. Median test positivity was 4.3% for SARS-CoV-2 and 3.4% for influenza in primary care and 5% and 4%, respectively, in secondary care.
  • SARS-CoV-2 test positivity remains low in primary and secondary care in most countries, with most detections reported by two countries with higher rates of test positivity. Detections in primary care are mainly related to individuals aged 15 years and above, while in secondary care they primarily concern adults aged over 65 years.
  • Influenza virus activity is at baseline levels overall, with countries reporting few detections in primary and secondary care. Detections in primary care are mainly related to individuals aged 15 years and above, while in secondary care they mainly concern adults aged over 65 years. Most detections are influenza A viruses.
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity is very low.

Overview

ECDC monitors respiratory illness rates and virus activity across the EU/EEA. Findings are presented in the European Respiratory Virus Surveillance Summary (ERVISS.org), which is updated weekly.

Key visualisation from the weekly bulletin are included below.

All data are provisional and may be affected by reporting delays, incomplete country data or low testing volumes. A few countries with high testing rates can disproportionately influence pooled data. Further information is available under ‘Country notes’ and ‘Additional resources’.
