For 2023, 30 countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) reported 37 766 cases of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, corresponding to a crude rate of 8.1 cases per 100 000 population. Of all cases, 6.3% were reported as acute, 40.5% as chronic, 46.1% as ‘unknown’ and 7.1% as ‘could not be classified’.
