Strengthening public health intelligence through data analytics and artificial intelligence

Update
With so many public health events developing and emerging, it is increasingly important to strengthen public health intelligence to ensure timely detection, assessment and response to potential public health threats. This was the goal of the hybrid meeting on data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) for public health intelligence hosted by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which brought together international experts to advance innovation and collaboration in the field.

The hybrid meeting took place on 26–27 May 2026 in Stockholm and convened participants from ECDC and representatives from international organisations and national public health institutes worldwide with a role in public health intelligence.

The increasing availability of large and diverse data sources offers new opportunities to strengthen public health intelligence. However, leveraging these capabilities effectively requires responsible and coordinated use of data analytics and AI.

The meeting provided an opportunity to explore how advanced analytical methods and AI-driven approaches can support more efficient early detection of potential public health threats, improve situational awareness, and strengthen public health intelligence processes.

The event was part of the Data Science for Public Health Intelligence initiative, which aims to foster collaboration between institutions working on innovative approaches in this area. ECDC continues to support the integration of data analytics and AI into public health intelligence to enhance timely detection and response to emerging health threats.
