ECDC showcases upcoming open-source surveillance platform Epi+ in Luxembourg
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) presented Epi+, its upcoming open‑source platform for event‑based surveillance, at the General Assembly of Luxembourg’s Public Health Rapid Epidemiological Surveillance Hub. ECDC’s epidemic intelligence team highlighted how Epi+ will improve early detection capacities and support more coordinated surveillance across EU/EEA countries. The platform is currently being piloted in several Member States.
Epi+ will provide countries with enhanced tools to collect, triage and analyse signals that may indicate emerging public health events. By offering more standardised approaches for event reporting, better control over data and infrastructure, and reduced operational costs, Epi+ aims to strengthen national surveillance systems and support alignment with European requirements for coordinated threat monitoring.
‘Reliable, timely and shared information is the backbone of early warning and response,’ says Pamela Rendi-Wagner Director of ECDC. ‘Epi+ will help Luxembourg and other countries strengthen event‑based surveillance and ensure that signals are captured and acted upon quickly, improving our collective ability to detect and respond to emerging cross‑border threats.’
‘The Epi+ community is not just implementing a tool, it is building together a common approach for Event-based surveillance in Europe.’
says Gianfranco Spiteri, ECDC Head of the Global Epidemic Intelligence and Health Security Section.
During the presentation, ECDC showcased the platform’s purpose, core features and the Epi+ roadmap, accompanied by a live demonstration. In Luxembourg, Epi+ will support seamless data exchange among One Health partners, ranging from food and water safety to animal and environmental health, enabling coordinated analysis and a more integrated response across sectors.
By facilitating real‑time information flow and joint assessment, Epi+ is expected to support Luxembourg’s One Health surveillance framework and contribute to better preparedness for emerging threats across the EU/EEA.
