New hepatitis surveillance report shows strengthened public health cooperation with EU candidate countries
EU candidate countries are strengthening their communicable disease surveillance and preparation through the support of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), helping them further towards participation in ECDC's networks.
A new report on Hepatitis A surveillance that provides a regional overview of disease trends marks another step in this collaboration. The report brings together surveillance data from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Türkiye between 2015 and 2024.
As well as giving a clearer regional picture of Hepatitis A, the report shows how regular data collection and reporting can enable earlier detection of changes in disease patterns and better inform public health actions that can make a positive difference to people’s health.
This surveillance report was developed within the framework of the ECDC Accession Support Action 2020–20205, which aims to strengthen national surveillance systems of EU candidate countries to EU-level standards for surveillance, data quality, epidemic intelligence, preparedness and response. It is a practical example of how cooperation, shared methodologies, and stronger surveillance systems can support closer integration into Europe’s public health framework.
The Hepatitis A report is therefore more than a summary of disease trends. It is also a practical example of how cooperation, shared methodologies, and stronger surveillance systems can support closer integration into Europe’s public health framework.
