Members of the European Union Agencies Network on Scientific Advice (EU‑ANSA), an EU agency network that includes ECDC, have reaffirmed the central role of EU agencies in driving evidence‑based EU policy, through a joint statement signed by the agencies’ science chiefs.

Drawing on experience from recent crises such as the COVID19 pandemic, the statement from the EU agencies’ most senior scientific officers highlights how these institutions contribute across the research knowledge cycle – from identifying information gaps relevant to policy and defining research priorities, to supporting the incorporation of research results into regulatory science and policy implementation.

Piotr Kramarz, Chief Scientist at ECDC, said:

‘At a time of widespread mis- and disinformation and declining trust in science and scientific institutions, ECDC, as part of the EU-ANSA Network, remains firmly committed to the provision of sound science-based advice to inform policy. By upholding the highest standards of scientific integrity and clear communication, the Centre seeks to work together with the other partner EU Agencies to sustain public trust in scientific advice.’

Representing a wide range of sectors and domains, the signatories underline the importance of cross-disciplinary research, including within the One Health framework, to address complex and interconnected challenges such as climate change, emerging health threats and geopolitical tensions.

The signatories welcome the proposed Horizon Europe 2028–2034 programme and call for EU agencies to be proactively involved in future research programming, in recognition of their collective expertise, scientific networks and role in improving trust in science and public decisionmaking.
