ECDC: on Air - Episode 77 - Céline Gossner - What's biting Europe? Mosquitoes on the move
On World Mosquito Day, we’re taking a closer look at the mosquitoes making their way across Europe, the diseases they can transmit, and what this changing landscape means for public health. Mosquitoes capable of transmitting dengue and chikungunya are now established in more parts of Europe, while West Nile virus continues to cause locally acquired infections across the continent.
In this episode of ECDC: On Air, Céline Gossner, Deputy Head of Unit, One Health-related Diseases / Head of Section, Food, Water, Vector-borne and Zoonotic Diseases at ECDC, explains what is changing and why it matters.
How can an infection acquired while travelling lead to local transmission back home? Why does West Nile virus follow a different pattern? Which mosquitoes are involved, who is more at risk of severe disease, and what can we do to protect ourselves? We also look at mosquito control, the role of climate and environmental conditions, and why surveillance, early detection and preparedness are becoming increasingly important as Europe’s mosquito-borne disease landscape changes.
