From 3 to 11 September 2025, Africa CDC, the Gabonese Ministry of Health and ECDC co-organised a national training on Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS), aimed at strengthening national capacity through a One Health approach.

ECDC’s engagement was part of the Africa CDC – ECDC Partnership Project, which seeks to enhance antimicrobial resistance surveillance and response capacities in Africa.

The four-day training, held in Lambaréné, brought together over 40 public health professionals and healthcare practitioners from the human health sector, representing relevant ministries, national institutes and healthcare facilities. The training introduced the core principles of AMS and provided participants with practical tools to implement stewardship practices in their institutions. Similar trainings are planned across the country in the future.

Representing ECDC, Jeanine Pommier, Head of Section for Public Health Training delivered the opening remarks. Along with ECDC colleague Aya Nakitanda , they also provided on-site support towards the validation process and training.

The training was preceded by a two-day preparatory workshop in Libreville, during which local facilitators, Africa CDC and ECDC representatives jointly reviewed and validated the training materials. This collaborative process resulted in the development of a context-adapted AMS curriculum tailored for national implementation in Gabon.

On the sidelines, ECDC representatives   also visited Africa CDC’s Central Africa Regional Coordinating Centre (RCC) in Libreville to discuss ongoing work and regional public health priorities.

This activity was part of the broader Work Package 2 of the Africa CDC – ECDC Partnership Project, reflecting the strength of the Africa CDC – ECDC Partnership, and demonstrating how collaboration and shared expertise can advance strengthen public health capacity in Africa.
