As of 1 July 2026, the Ebola disease outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus is affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda.

On 30 June 2026, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)’s National Institute of Public Health reported a total of 1 333 confirmed cases and 399 total related deaths (from data as of 29 June). This is an increase of 26 confirmed cases and 22 deaths (eight of which are among the new cases) compared to the previous report from 29 June (data as of 28 June). In addition, it is reported that 609 patients are hospitalised in isolation. Among the individuals who tested positive for Bundibugyo virus, 189 people have recovered, and 82.7% of identified contacts are under follow-up in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

Among the confirmed cases, 1 214 cases (including 335 deaths) have been reported from 23/36 health zones in the Ituri province. In North Kivu, 116 cases (including 63 deaths) have been reported from 11/34 health zones. In South Kivu, three cases (including one death) have been reported from 1/34 health zones. A total of 35/104 health zones are currently affected by the ongoing outbreak across the three provinces.

In the latest official report, confirmed cases counted in the Nia-Nia health zone (Ituri) involve cases from a fourth province, Haut-Uele (a neighbouring province with Ituri that borders South Sudan and the Central African Republic).

As of 30 June 2026, a total of 20 confirmed cases, including two deaths, have been reported by the Ministry of Health in Uganda. The last confirmed case was reported on 21 June, and no new cases have been reported since. Among the confirmed cases, 15 had travel links to DRC and five were associated with local transmission events. Fifteen individuals have recovered.

In the European Union/European Economic Area, one confirmed case of Ebola virus disease was reported in France by the Ministry of Health on 24 June. This is in addition to one other confirmed case reported on 19 May in a US citizen who was medically evacuated to Germany for treatment. Both cases were imported from areas affected by the ongoing outbreak in DRC.

Although information remains limited, we assess the likelihood of infection for people living in the EU/EEA as very low. ECDC continues to monitor the situation closely and will update its assessment as new information becomes available.

A weekly update on this outbreak is available in the Communicable disease threats report.
