​The ECDC communicable disease threats report is a weekly bulletin intended for epidemiologists and health professionals in the area of communicable disease prevention and control. Summarising information gathered by ECDC through its epidemic intelligence activities regarding communicable disease threats of concern to the European Union, it also provides updates on the global situation and changes in the epidemiology of communicable diseases
with potential to affect Europe, including diseases that are the focus of eradication efforts.

Executive Summary

​The ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report is a weekly bulletin intended for epidemiologists and health professionals in the area of communicable disease prevention and control. This issue covers the period 18 to 24 May 2014 and includes updates on:

MERS-CoV

Over the past week, 37 new MERS-CoV cases have been reported. Thirty cases were reported by Saudi Arabia. Seven cases, which occurred in 2012 in Jordan, have been included to the case count. The USA has reported a third case, via secondary transmission, however it does not meet the current case definition for a confirmed case, but meets the case definition of a probable case.ECDC published its ninth updated rapid risk assessment on 24 April 2014. 

Ebola Virus Disease – West Africa

Since the last update of 12 May 2014, there have been six new confirmed cases and five new deaths of Ebola Virus Disease. Media report a suspected family cluster in Télimélé, Guinea, which has not yet been confirmed by official sources.ECDC has published an updated rapid risk assessment and provided guidance to Member States for travellers from and to the affected countries.
