Expert consultation on the evidence base of public health use of antivirals for prevention and treatment of influenza
Event
Neuraminidase inhibitors, commonly referred to as antivirals, have been subject to much debate about the effectiveness in preventing and treating influenza. ECDC convened a meeting of experts in order to review and discuss evidence regarding antivirals.
Objectives:
- Review emerging evidence on the effectiveness (prophylaxis and treatment) of antivirals
- Discuss the evidence’s conclusions in the light of public health recommendations EU Member States could issue, and
- Provide recommendations for further public health research to strengthen the evidence where needed.
This meeting followed a request from the ECDC Advisory Forum and from the EU Health Security Committee to review the available evidence and contributed to an ECDC report on this issue published later 2015.
