You will work in the Food-, Water-, Vector-borne and Zoonotic Diseases (FOVEZ) section in the One Health related Diseases (OHD) unit. To find out more about what the unit does, visit https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/about-us/ecdcs-organisational-structure.

The section is divided into two groups:

  • Surveillance
  • Scientific Advice and Outbreak Response

Both groups are covering the full spectrum of diseases under the Section’s remit.

We are seeking a group lead with deep expertise in vector-borne diseases who can also provide strategic leadership and guidance across all disease areas under the remit of the FOVEZ Section. The successful candidate will be expected to actively integrate and coordinate work across food-, water-, vector-borne, and zoonotic diseases, ensuring a holistic approach to public health challenges.

Reporting to the Head of Section, you will lead a team of approximately eight people supporting the Centre’s work related to Scientific Advice and Outbreak Response of food-, water-, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases.

In this position, you will have a wide variety of tasks that will give you the opportunity to:

  • Lead, manage, and support the group’s staff, fostering effective team dynamics, encouraging a service-oriented mindset, providing timely and constructive feedback, and promoting professional development opportunities;
  • Coordinate the activities of the Scientific Advice and Outbreak Response Group, ensuring that the annual workplan is implemented and that all activities align with the objectives of the FOVEZ Section;
  • Oversee and contribute to the development of scientific, evidence-based public health guidance, both in response to requests from Member States, the European Commission, and the European Parliament, as well as through activities initiated by ECDC;
  • Contribute to improving the understanding of factors (e.g. epidemiological, environmental, social and technical factors) influencing the occurrence of diseases under the Section’s remit;
  • Lead and participate in responses to outbreaks of diseases under the Section’s remit;
  • Provide strategic leadership and guidance across all disease areas covered by the Section, ensuring integration and collaboration between teams working on food-, water-, vector-borne, and zoonotic diseases;
  • Initiate, commission, and manage studies and consultancies across all disease areas under the Section’s remit, ensuring effective oversight of project delivery and accountability for achieving strategic objectives and intended outcomes;
  • Contribute to the formulation of the FOVEZ Section’s annual workplan, ensuring coordination and alignment of group activities;
  • Act on behalf of the Head of Section during periods of absence or as requested, ensuring the continuation of the Section’s activities and the achievement of its objectives; and,
  • Contribute to other ECDC activities as required, according to your area of expertise.

What are we looking for?

Formal requirements

For your application to be considered eligible you must fulfil all the following requirements by the application deadline:

  • A level of education which corresponds to completed university studies attested by a diploma when the normal period of university education is 4 years or more, or a level of education which corresponds to completed university studies attested by a diploma and appropriate professional experience of at least 1 year when the normal period of university education is at least 3 years1;
  • At least 9 years of professional experience2 (following the award of the diploma);
  • Thorough knowledge of one of the official EU languages and a satisfactory knowledge of another official EU language to the extent necessary for the performance of your duties3;
  • Nationality of one of the EU Member States or of Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and to be entitled to your full rights as a citizen;
  • To have fulfilled any obligations imposed by the applicable laws on military service;
  • Meet the character requirements for the duties involved4; and
  • Be physically fit to perform the duties linked to the post.

You will need to provide appropriate documents to show that you meet all of the above criteria.

Selection criteria

For your application to be evaluated further, you will also need:

  • At least 8 years of professional experience (following the award of the diploma) acquired in expert positions relevant to the job description, with at least 5 years of experience in the field of vector-borne diseases;
  • University or post graduate degree within the field of medicine, veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, public health, epidemiology, microbiology or another field relevant to the position;
  • Good knowledge of the EU policies and activities relevant to the duties listed above;
  • Proven expertise in developing and communicating scientific, evidence-based public health guidance on diseases under the Section’s remit;
  • Thorough scientific and technical experience related to the epidemiology, microbiology, prevention and control of vector-borne diseases, obtained at a regional, national and/or international level; in addition, the candidate must demonstrate ability to lead and contribute to work on other diseases within the Section’s remit;
  • Proven experience in communicating scientific information to scientists, risk managers and the general public, including oral presentations, technical reports, and scientific publications;
  • Demonstrated experience in leading, managing, and supporting multidisciplinary teams, preferably as a line manager;
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

What can we offer you?

We offer a competitive salary and a range of benefits, including health insurance, learning opportunities and flexible work arrangements such as flexible working hours and teleworking in the Stockholm area for part of the week. Additionally, you can work up to 10 days a year from outside the Stockholm area.

Depending on your experience, the monthly basic salary usually starts at € 8911 and may be supplemented by various allowances including, as applicable, expatriation and/or generous family allowances. Salary is exempt from national tax and instead an Agency tax is deducted. We also provide financial support when relocating to Stockholm.

How does our selection process work?

Our selection process takes, on average, three months from the application deadline. All selection processes include a remote written test and a video conference interview; some selection processes may include additional steps.

After a candidate has been selected for the position, additional shortlisted candidates can be placed on a reserve list. The reserve list may be used when ECDC needs to fill similar positions at the same level in the future. The reserve list is valid until 31 December 2026 and may be extended.
