West Nile virus in Europe in 2022 - infections among humans and outbreaks among equids and/or birds, updated 27 July 2022
Since last week's update, and as of 27 July 2022, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 36 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and one death related to WNV infections. Cases were reported by Italy (27), Greece (8) and Slovakia (1). One death was reported by Italy. EU-neighbouring countries reported 14 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia (14) and no deaths related to WNV infections.
During the current transmission season, within the reporting countries, human cases of WNV infection were reported from 22 different NUTS 3 or GAUL 1 regions.
Since the beginning of the 2022 transmission season, one outbreak among equids and 13 outbreaks among birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. The one outbreak among equids have been reported by Italy. Outbreaks among birds have been reported by Italy (12) and Germany (1).
