The low immunisation rate reported highlights the difficulties of reaching young adult women. However, coverage rates observed in the primary target population in Italy, i.e. 11-year-old girls, of HPV vaccination campaign, currently around 64%, are also far from the objective of 95% coverage established for this age group. The results of this study emphasise therefore that it would be premature to extend the active free-of-charge offer of HPV vaccination to older women and that efforts should be focused on the priority target.
