On 15 to 16 April, ECDC Director Dr. Andrea Ammon was on a mission to Georgia. The purpose was to learn more about the developments of the public health system of Georgia, establish contacts and discuss ECDC support with the EU acquis on communicable diseases.

During the mission she met Georgia’s Minister and First Deputy Minister for Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Health, Labour and Social Affairs and the Deputy Directors General of National Center for Disease Control and Public Health. 

Dr. Andrea Ammon also met with the US CDC, WHO Country Office and EU Delegations to Georgia.

Georgia and the EU at a glance:

  • On 3 March 2022, Georgia applied for EU membership.

  • On 17 June 2022, the European Commission issued its opinion on the application for EU membership.

  • On 23 June 2022, the European Council discussed Georgia's EU membership application. The European Council stated that it was ready to grant the status of candidate country to Georgia once the priorities specified in the Commission’s opinion on Georgia’s membership application have been addressed.

  • Georgia was granted candidate status in December 2023, on the understanding that the relevant steps set out in the Commission recommendation of 8 November 2023 are taken.
