Comparison of whole genome sequences of West Nile viruses detected in Europe between 2017 and 2019
With this project, ECDC would like to support scientific studies on the genetic characterisation of West Nile virus (WNV) to better understand the circulation of the virus in Europe and consequently to strengthen surveillance and response activities. Whole genome sequences of WNVs detected in human and animal hosts and mosquito vectors in Europe in 2017-2019 will be determined and compared with each other and with additional complete genome sequences available in public databases. The results of this project will help to describe the potential genetic variation of WNV amongst countries/regions and hosts. Analysis may also identify potential markers of virulence. The duration of this project is six months.
