The latest European Monthly Measles Monitoring (EMMO) provides analyses of last year's measles surveillance data. In 2011, 30,567 cases of measles were reported by 29 European countries, roughly same number of cases last year but a four-fold increase compared to 2009 (7 175). Only two countries in Europe remained measles-free in 2011, Iceland and Cyprus.

The coordination of European FWD outbreaks can be difficult to manage. In order to help Member State countries with the task, ECDC is launching an online toolkit which provides investigators with a series of tools for the investigation of an outbreak that involves at least two EU Member States.

The risk for transmission of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) to individuals visiting FMD affected areas is extremely low, if consumption of products from infected animals or direct contact with such  animals is avoided, concludes a ECDC rapid risk assessment issued today.

Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview

Influenza activity continued to increase in week 6, though with significant variation in timing across Europe and no clear geographic progression this season. The dominant virus remains A(H3). Maisn surveillance data is now available in ECDC’s Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview.

Since November 2011, a newly recognised virus, provisionally named ‘Schmallenberg’ virus, has been reported in cattle, sheep and goats in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and France. Additionally, one bison has been confirmed positive for Schmallenberg virus in Germany.

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are infections that occur after exposure to healthcare. Each year 4 million patients acquire a healthcare-associated infection in the European Union and about 37 000 of them die as the direct consequence of the infection. The most frequent types of HAI are surgical site infections, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, bloodstream infections and gastrointestinal infections.

In January 2012, the ECDC conducted a rapid assessment on the status of surveillance for M. pneumoniae infection in EU and EEA countries. Available data seem to indicate that southern Europe is not yet facing an increase as important as that reported in the north.

Influenza activity is slowly increasing in countries scattered across Europe and is currently dominated by A(H3N2) viruses though with A(H1N1) also being important in some of the severe cases. The European Public Health Microbiology Training (EUPHEM) call for fellows opens today. The programme, coordinated and funded by ECDC, will recruit 4 fellows for a two-year training programme in public health microbiology.

Schmallenberg virus is a newly recognised Orthobunyavirus that was first detected in November 2011 in cattle in the Netherlands and Germany. As of 25 January, the disease has been detected in cattle, sheep and goats in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and more recently in sheep in the United Kingdom.
