FATAL CASES

Note! As of the end of April 2010 ECDC has stopped scanning national web sites in EU/EFTA countries for reports of deaths confirmed due to the 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1). The updated figures from 3 May 2010 below are the last published, for the time being.

Note! These data in the histogram and map above represent deaths confirmed to be due to pandemic influenza and reported on EU/EEA country national web-sites by the relevant authorities. These reports are gathered by ECDC through active surveillance. Because of reporting delay and incomplete reporting they will be more than the deaths that have been reported to ECDC by national authorities such that appear in the Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview. They will also be an underestimate of the true number of deaths due to influenza for reasons summarised by WHO.

MORTALITY RATE

Mortality rate due to 2009 Pandemic Influenza A(H1N1) in EU and EFTA countries (Updated 3 May 2010)

Note! These rates are derived from cumulative deaths confirmed to be due to pandemic influenza and reported on EU/EEA country national web-sites by the relevant authorities. The numbers are in the ECDC Table with data to February 8th divided by EU/EEA whole population estimates from EuroStat for 2009 . They represent a rate for the first nine months of the pandemic. The map will be updated monthly until 12 months have been completed.

The numbers of deaths are gathered by ECDC through active surveillance. Because of reporting delay and incomplete reporting they are more than the deaths that have been reported to ECDC by national authorities such that appear in the Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview. They will also be an underestimate of the true number of deaths due to influenza for reasons summarised by WHO.
