HelicsWin.Net (also referred to as HWN) is a software application developed for the manual entry of data of the ECDC HAI-Net surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

HelicsWin.Net version 4.8.0 replaces version 4.7.5 with the following changes and features:
- Introduction of the new metadata of the module “HEP” which is about the surveillance of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
- Addition of new survey for sentinel site(s) submission
- Update of the data fields on the Patients survey of the module “HEP” to match the new protocol
- Addition of the new survey for aggregated data submission of the module “HEP”
- Update of the database export functionality to reflect new metadata and added surveys

About HelicsWin.Net
HelicsWin.Net (also referred to as HWN) is a software application developed for the manual entry of data of the ECDC HAI-Net surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the ECDC Hepatitis B&C continuum of care sentinel surveillance data.
The current version includes six surveillance modules:
- HAI-Net PPS: point prevalence survey (PPS) of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use in European acute care hospitals (Protocol version 5.0), and
- HAI-Net ICU: surveillance of healthcare-associated infections in European intensive care units (ICUs) (Protocol version 2.0), and
- HAI-Net CDI: surveillance of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) in the EU (pilot protocol version 2.2).
- HAI-Net SSI: surveillance of surgical site infections (SSIs) (Protocol version 2.2)
- HAI-Net HALT: point prevalence surveys of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial use in European long-term care facilities (Protocol version 2.1),
- HEP – Hepatitis B and C sentinel surveillance: Protocol for sentinel surveillance of chronic hepatitis B and C treatment and outcomes in European Union and European Economic Area countries (Protocol version 1.0)
Translation
By downloading a ‘translation file’ to your computer, you can change the language of the HelicsWin.Net user interface.
To translate HelicsWin.Net, follow the instructions in the User Manual. In short:
- Download HelicsWin.Net from the links above.
- On your computer, locate the folder that contains HelicsWin.Net. The default location is ‘C:\HWN2’.
- In that folder (e.g. ‘C:\HWN2’), locate the file named ‘Translation.mdb’ and move it to another folder, in order to create a back-up version of that file.
- Download one of the three files below, each of which is named ‘Translation.mdb’.
- Move the downloaded file ‘Translation.mdb’ into the folder that originally contained the ‘Translation.mdb’ file. For example, create C:\HWN2\Translation.mdb.

These translations have been provided by national users of HelicsWin.Net. Additional translations will be added to this web page over time, if they are sent by national teams to ECDC.
Installation agreement
INSTALLATION OR USE OF THE HelicsWin.Net SOFTWARE INDICATES YOUR ASSENT TO THE FOLLOWING LICENSE AGREEMENT:
The software HelicsWin.Net is freeware and can be used freely, copied and given to third parties under the following terms:
1. You can use the software free of charge for private and professional purposes. You may not however sell it for profit and you may not bundle HelicsWin.Net in other software packages without prior written approval from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).
2. You are allowed to offer the program on a website that is free of charges, provided that this licence agreement is visible to, and accepted by, potential third party users prior to use.
3. For any other form of publication, ECDC’s prior written permission is necessary.
4. The software remains property of the ECDC also in case of dissemination to third parties.
5. The software, especially the name of the software and the name of the ECDC must remain unmodified.
6. THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE AND ON AN "AS IS" BASIS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE WARRANTIES THAT IT IS FREE OF DEFECTS, MERCHANTABLE, FIT FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE OR NON-INFRINGING. THE ENTIRE RISK AS TO THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE OF THE SOFTWARE IS WITH YOU. SHOULD THE SOFTWARE PROVE DEFECTIVE, YOU ASSUME THE COST OF ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION.
7. IN NO EVENT SHALL THE ECDC, COPYRIGHT HOLDER, OR ANY OTHER PARTY WHO MAY REDISTRIBUTE THE SOFTWARE BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR DAMAGES, INCLUDING ANY GENERAL, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE (INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, LOSS OF DATA, DATA BEING RENDERED INACCURATE, LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, BUSINESS INTERRUPTIONS, LOSS SUSTAINED BY YOU OR THIRD PARTIES, OR A FAILURE OF THE SOFTWARE TO OPERATE WITH ANY OTHER SOFTWARE) EVEN IF THE ECDC, COPYRIGHT HOLDER, OR OTHER PARTY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.
8. VIOLATION OR NON-ACCEPTANCE OF ANY OF THE ABOVE TERMS WILL IMMEDIATELY AND UNCONDITIONALLY TERMINATE YOUR LICENSE.
Users will be asked to agree with the license agreement before installing the software.
