Meet Ines Cherif, a medical doctor with a specialisation in Preventive and Community Medicine from Tunisia. Over the past two years, she has worked as an assistant professor at the Pasteur Institute of Tunis and the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis. In September 2022, Ines started her MediPIET fellowship including a project focusing on tuberculosis surveillance in Tunisia, guided by the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases.

Considerable increases were seen in reported cases of syphilis and gonorrhoea in 2023, relative to 2022, and continues the increasing trend seen in 2022.
For 2023, 96 969 confirmed cases of gonorrhoea were reported in 28 European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries, with a crude notification rate of 25.0 cases per 100 000 population, representing a 31% increase in the crude notification rate compared with 2022.
In 2023, 78 confirmed congenital syphilis cases were reported from 13 EU/EEA countries, while 13 other countries reported no cases. For 2022, 73 cases were reported by 14 out of 25 countries contributing data.
In 2023, 41 051 confirmed syphilis cases were reported in 29 EU/EEA Member States, with a crude notification rate of 9.9 cases per 100 000 population, representing a 13% increase in the crude notification rate compared to 2022, and a 100% increase compared to 2014.
For 2023, 230 199 confirmed cases of chlamydia infection were reported in 27 EU/EEA countries, with a crude notification rate of 70.4 cases per 100 000 population.
