In 2019, 29 countries in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) reported a total of 49 752 tuberculosis (TB) cases (9.6 per 100 000 population).

West Nile virus in Europe in 2021 - infections among humans and outbreaks among equids and/or birds, updated 9 September 2021
Between 3 and 9 September 2021, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 15 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and no deaths related to WNV infections. Cases were reported by Greece (8), Italy (3), Germany (2) and Spain (2). EU-neighbouring countries reported 3 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia (3) and no deaths related to WNV infections.

Between 3 and 9 September 2021, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 15 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and no deaths related to WNV infections. Since the beginning of the 2021 transmission season and as of 9 September 2021, EU/EEA countries have reported 87 human cases of WNV infection in Greece (43), Italy (27), Spain (5), Romania (4), Austria (3), Hungary (3), and Germany (2) and 5 deaths in Greece (3), Spain (1) and Romania (1). EU-neighbouring countries have reported 12 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia (12) and 2 deaths in Serbia (2).

Since the beginning of the 2021 transmission season, 9 outbreaks among equids and 1 outbreak among birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. Outbreaks among equids have been reported by Spain (6) and Germany (3). An outbreak among birds has been reported by Spain (1).

ECDC awards 77 M€ to strengthen EU/EEA Member States’ capacities to detect and identify SARS-CoV-2 variants
ECDC has awarded more than 77 M€ to 24 EU/EEA countries to strengthen whole genome sequencing and RT-PCR infrastructures within the countries’ national public health programmes.

Seasonal influenza - Annual Epidemiological Report for 2020-2021
For the EU/EEA, influenza activity remained at or below inter-seasonal levels throughout the 2020−21 season, probably due to the impact of the various public health and social measures implemented to reduce transmission of SARS-CoV-2. Only 10 sentinel and 158 non-sentinel specimens tested positive for influenza during the 2020−21 season. Compared with previous seasons a slightly lower number of samples were tested in sentinel surveillance and a similar number in non-sentinel surveillance.
