New outbreak of Ebola virus disease detected in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)
On 1 June 2020, a new outbreak of Ebola virus disease was declared in Wangata Health Zone, near Mbandaka, the regional capital of Equateur Province in the western region of DRC.
ECDC marks 15 year anniversary
This week marks ECDC’s 15-year anniversary. ECDC, Europe’s agency for public health, became operational in May 2005, and has been working since to strengthen Europe’s defences against communicable diseases. As ECDC reflects on the progress and developments of the past 15 years, the COVID-19 pandemic is a constant reminder of how important it is for all countries in the EU/EEA to work together in response to public health threats.

The first report monitoring the progress towards the elimination of hepatitis B and C across European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries has been published by ECDC.
New EU Initiative on Health Security for the EU neighbours
A five-year agreement to implement a new EU Initiative on Health Security to enhance public health preparedness and response capacities of the European Union enlargement and the European Neighbourhood Policy partner countries has been signed between ECDC and the European Commission. The total funding will be 9 million euros.
Measles continues to spread across the EU/EEA – No time for complacency
A total of 13 200 measles cases were reported by the EU/EEA countries and the UK in 2019. In addition, approximately 1 000 measles cases were reported in the first two months of 2020. Cases were reported in all age groups. This highlights the importance of continuous efforts to improve routine childhood immunisation programmes and address immunity gaps in the population.

Antimicrobial resistance in the EU: infections with foodborne bacteria becoming harder to treat
Salmonella and Campylobacter are becoming increasingly resistant to ciprofloxacin, one of the antibiotics of choice for treating infections caused by these bacteria. The conclusion is part of the latest report on antimicrobial resistance in zoonoses released today by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which also presents some positive trends in the animal sector.
