Since 2009, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has coordinated the enhanced surveillance of sexually transmitted infections in Europe.

In 2010, 21 EU/EEA Member States participated in the European Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (Euro-GASP), testing a total of 1766 isolates.

This report presents the results from the 2011 gonococcal antimicrobial susceptibility surveillance programme (Euro-GASP) and a summary of the second distribution from the 2011 external quality assurance (EQA) scheme.

​This report summarises the surveillance results for Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial susceptibility in the EU/EEA. In 2012, 20 EU/EEA Member States participated in Euro-GASP.

During 2013, the European Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (Euro-GASP) followed the biannual decentralised and centralised testing model used in previous years, requesting participating laboratories to collect gonococcal isolates during two periods (April/May and October/November).

An EQA scheme for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been available to laboratories participating in ECDC’s European Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) surveillance network since 2010. This EQA scheme has so far shown high levels of inter-laboratory comparability in the presence of differing methodologies.

The European Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (Euro-GASP) follows a decentralised and centralised testing model. In 2015, 24 EU/EEA Member States participated in Euro-GASP, 17 through decentralised testing.

An EQA scheme for antimicrobial susceptibility testing in Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been available to laboratories participating in ECDC’s European Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) surveillance network since 2010. This is the third EQA to be published on antimicrobial susceptibility testing in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
