Flu Awareness Week, 18-22 October 2021
The Flu Awareness Week is marked across the WHO European Region every year in October. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of vaccination for people’s health and well-being and to increase the uptake of seasonal influenza vaccination of people with underlying risk factors.
Facilitating COVID-19 vaccination acceptance and uptake in the EU/EEA
This technical report presents considerations for European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries when diagnosing barriers to acceptance and uptake of COVID-19 vaccination, and designing and implementing interventions to increase uptake.
Since the beginning of the 2021 transmission season and as of 14 October 2021, EU/EEA countries have reported 132 human cases of WNV infection in Greece (54), Italy (52), Hungary (7), Romania (7), Spain (6), Austria (3) and Germany (3) and 9 deaths in Greece (7), Spain (1) and Romania (1). EU-neighbouring countries have reported 18 human cases of WNV infection and 3 deaths, all in Serbia.
West Nile virus in Europe in 2021 - outbreaks among equids and/or birds, updated 14 October 2021
Since the beginning of the 2021 transmission season, 29 outbreaks among equids and 8 outbreaks among birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. Outbreaks among equids have been reported by Germany (12), Spain (10), Portugal (3), Hungary (2), Greece (1) and France (1). Outbreaks among birds have been reported by Spain (7) and Slovenia (1).

ECDC supports Member States to increase COVID-19 vaccination acceptance and uptake in the EU/EEA
On October 15, ECDC published the report “Facilitating COVID-19 vaccination acceptance and uptake in the EU/EEA” which aims to further support Member States in identifying barriers to the uptake of COVID-19 vaccination, and designing and implementing interventions aimed at increasing vaccination coverage.
