Reporting on 2009 surveillance data and 2010 epidemic intelligence data

This report, originally published by WHO/Europe, summarizes ECDC and WHO/Europe's first joint influenza surveillance meeting, held on 7-9 June 2011 and hosted by the Slovenian Ministry of Health.

​The virological influenza pattern observed was not consistent enough to make a clear prediction for the 2011-2012 season in Europe. In general, the findings on the impact of influenza in the southern hemisphere in 2011 were reassuring for Europe, and the match of the A(H3N2) viruses with the vaccine was considered good.

Influenza activity started in week 50/2014 and lasted until week 20/2015, as in the previous season. Compared with the previous season, nine EU/EEA countries reported higher peak ILI rates in primary care. In almost all countries, the season was dominated by influenza A(H3N2) viruses.

The sixth edition of the Annual Epidemiological Report on communicable diseases in Europe provides a comprehensive summary of surveillance data for 2010 and an analysis of the public health threats detected in 2011 through ECDC’s routine epidemic intelligence.

As in previous seasons, influenza activity started in week 51/2015 and lasted until week 20/2016. Compared with previous seasons, primary care consultation rates for influenza-like illness (ILI)/acute respiratory infection (ARI) were similar in most EU/EEA countries. In almost all countries, the season was dominated by influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses.

Influenza activity continued to increase across Europe, concludes the Weekly Influenza Surveillance Overview, Week 5, 2013. The epidemics may have passed their peaks in a few countries, although some countries experienced a resurgence of influenza-like-illness rates.
