HIV/AIDS surveillance in Europe 2021 (2020 data)
This report is the latest in a series published jointly by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the WHO Regional Office for Europe that has been summarizing data on HIV and AIDS in the WHO European Region and in the European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) since 2007.
World AIDS day: Concerning number of HIV infections going undiagnosed, shows new data from ECDC & WHO Europe
A new report published jointly by ECDC and WHO, shows a 24% drop in the rate of newly diagnosed HIV cases between 2019 and 2020. This drop is largely due to reduced HIV testing during 2020 as a result of COVID-19 restrictions and disruptions to services.
Epidemiological update: Omicron variant of concern (VOC) – data as of 29 November 2021 (12:30)
As of 29 November 2021, 33 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 Omicron VOC cases have been reported by eight European Union and European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries (Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal) according to information from public sources.
Surveillance of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities in the EU/EEA
ECDC has worked with EU/EEA countries to develop a methodology for regular national reporting of existing national surveillance data on COVID-19 in LTCFs, aiming for maximum feasibility. This is to enable ECDC to communicate timely information on epidemiological trends of COVID-19 in LTCFs, in support of national and EU/EEA-level preparedness and response activities.

ECDC publishes Threat assessment brief - Emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.529
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published a new Threat Assessment Brief on the new variant of concern (VOC) B.1.1.529, or Omicron. Based on currently available genetic information, the risks of this VOC are high, according to preliminary data.

A SARS-CoV-2 variant belonging to Pango lineage B.1.1.529, with a high number of S-gene mutations compared to the original virus was detected at the beginning of November 2021. On 26 November 2021 the variant was designated a variant of concern (VOC) and assigned the label Omicron by the World Health Organization (WHO).
