During the week 10 – 16 June, an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease in Scotland, a case of anthrax in an injecting drug user and a measles outbreak in Poland are in focus.

Following reports of two cases of anthrax among injecting drug users in Germany, ECDC and EMCDDA jointly prepared a rapid risk assessment.

On 4 July 2012, Germany reported a third case where an injecting drug user had died of anthrax. This last case is of cutaneus anthrax. Microbiological investigations suggest that the strain in the first 2012 cases is identical or almost identical to the strain from the 2009-2010 cases.

This is an update to the joint rapid risk assessment published on 22 June 2012 by ECDC and EMCDDA on anthrax cases among injecting drug users in Germany. This is in response to a third case in Berlin. It contains information updated up to the 6 July 2012.

During the week 8-14 July, ECDC monitored several EU and non-EU threats.
