Anthrax - Annual Epidemiological Report for 2018
Anthrax continues to be an uncommon disease in humans in Europe, with only a few cases reported every year. For 2018, three confirmed anthrax cases were reported, one each in Netherlands, Romania and Spain. Twenty-seven EU/EEA countries notified zero confirmed cases.

Update on the polio situation in the EU/EEA and the world
Globally, as of 9 August, 19 cases of polio due to wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) and 223 cases due to circulating vaccine derived poliovirus (cVDPV) have been reported this year. In 2022, the cVDPV cases have been reported in 15 countries, with 93% of the cases attributed to cVDPV type 2 (cVDPV2).

Langya henipavirus under ECDC monitoring
According to a group of Chinese scientists, the detection of a previously unknown, phylogenetically distinct henipavirus, named Langya henipavirus (LayV), was reported in China.

West Nile virus in Europe in 2022 - human cases, updated 10 August 2022
Since last week’s update, and as of 10 August 2022, European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries reported 67 human cases of West Nile virus (WNV) infection and three deaths related to WNV infections. Cases were reported by Italy (50), Greece (15) and Austria (2). Deaths were reported by Italy (3). EU-neighbouring countries reported 11 human cases of WNV infection in Serbia (11) and deaths (2) related to WNV infections in Serbia.

West Nile virus in Europe in 2022 - outbreaks among equids and/or birds, updated 10 August 2022
Since the beginning of the 2022 transmission season, seven outbreaks among equids and 39 outbreaks among birds have been reported by EU/EEA countries. Outbreaks among equids have been reported by Italy (7). Outbreaks among birds have been reported by Italy (38) and Germany (1).
