Exploring opportunities for support in healthcare-associated infections (HAI) – Romania, 4–7 July 2016
This mission report contains details of a visit to Romania by a team of multidisciplinary experts from ECDC and Norway, and the follow-up proposals.

Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) Conference 2014
The ninth Healthcare Infection Society (HIS) International Conference was a three-day conference focussing on infection prevention and control, organised by the HIS in collaboration with the French Society of Hospital Hygiene (SF2H). The conference programme covered a range of key topics such as epidemiology, surveillance, information technology in infection prevention and control, decontamination, blood borne viruses, antimicrobial resistance and rapid diagnostic methods.

ECDC expert visit to Romania to discuss aspects related to healthcare-associated infections
A team of multidisciplinary experts, including ECDC staff and an expert from Norway, visited Romania between 4 and 7 July to discuss aspects related to the detection, surveillance, prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), together with staff at the Ministry of Health, the National Institute for Public Health and other Romanian stakeholders. This was an exploratory visit following a request for support made by the Romanian Minister of Health to tackle the challenges that the country was currently facing in this area.

Course on “Control of multidrug-resistant micro-organisms (MDROs) in health care settings”
The main objective of the course was to strengthen capacity in EU Member States for control of healthcare-associated infections due to multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in acute health care settings and to promote the broadest possible implementation of appropriate methods.

Each year, 33000 people die from an infection due to bacteria resistant to antibiotics. The burden of infections with bacteria resistant to antibiotics on the European population is comparable to that of influenza, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined.
