Reporting on 2009 surveillance data and 2010 epidemic intelligence data

Since November 2011, the so-called Schmallenberg virus (SBV) has been reported in cattle, sheep and goats in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, Luxembourg, Italy and now Spain. The Dutch Central Veterinary Institute found anti-SBV antibodies in 70 percent of samples taken from Dutch cattle between 1 November 2011 and 1 February 2012. This indicates widespread infection and an underestimation of total cases of infection with the virus.

The main topic for this Annual Epidemiological Report is healthcare-associated infections, including antimicrobial resistance.

The first European Communicable Disease Epidemiological Report produced by ECDC raised that the most important disease threat in Europe is posed by the micro-organisms that have become resistant to antibiotics.

This edition of the Annual Report gives special attention to vaccine-preventable diseases and immunisation programmesin the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries. This edition was revised January and June 2010 and has authority over the print edition.

This issue of the ECDC Communicable Disease Threats Report (CDTR) covers the period 16-22 October 2016 and includes updates on Zika virus, Salmonella and extensively drug-resistant TB.
